GeoExchange systems are suited to new building construction, retrofit projects or the replacement of outdated, inefficient HVAC systems.
Application
In large buildings where a GeoExchange system uses multiple heat pumps,
tenants are able to control the climate of each building 'zone' individually
- providing total comfort control.
In an integrated system, the GeoExchange heat pump that controls the 'sunny side' of a building can provide cooling while those on the 'shady side' are provided heat. Different heat pump models or sizes can be installed to meet the heating or cooling requirements of the different zones within the building.
What's more, integrated systems can provide extraordinary cost savings by recovering excess heat from one 'zone' of the building and then employing it to heat another. This arrangement is particularly effective when large, high-capacity GeoExchange systems are installed in combination with smaller, perimeter units. In such cases, the earth connection serves as the heat source or heat sink only for the difference between the building's heating and cooling needs - thereby reducing the size (and cost) of the required loop.
In commercial or institutional complexes where there are multiple
buildings the heat pumps in each building can be tied into the same
earth loop.
Performance/Costs
Commercial GeoExchange systems have the greatest potential for direct utility and maintenance savings as these costs are a substantial factor in any operating budget.
GeoExchange systems are very robust (having few moving components) and heat pumps are installed indoors where they are protected from weather and vandalism. Warranty programs typically cover a heat pump for as much as ten (10) years while the ground loop installation is typically guaranteed for at least fifty (50) years. These factors dramatically lower maintenance costs compared to conventional systems.

Further
Benefits
Hybrid Systems
Where a large GeoExchange system is not practical (perhaps because
of limited space) hybrid systems can be implemented which incorporates
conventional heat rejection towers/boilers coupled with GeoExchange
loops. The tower/boilers are able to handle the peak seasonal loads
as required.
Where a boiler/tower systems already exists, it can be retrofitted
with a GeoExchange upgrade for added efficiency.
Water Conservation
In addition to the obvious environmental advantage that GeoExchange
systems do not directly burn fossil fuels, these systems can also
significantly reduce the consumption of water by eliminating the need
for commercial cooling towers, evaporative cooling systems, and water
cooled condensers (for air coupled systems).
